Photography
In
very simple terms the more kit you are prepared
to encumber yourself with, the better your photos
have the ability to be. However, that is not
to say you cannot take some truly excellent images
with a simple point and shoot, provided the circumstances
are suitable and you have the requisite skills,
indeed a few images in this book were taken with
exactly that and I defy you to identify them.
With more and variable light source and wider
lenses, you become that much more flexible and then you have the ability
to create.
Lighting. When you see underwater photographs, you often wonder at the incredible myriad of colours that nature has cloaked so much of the underwater world in. And yet when you dive, rarely are these evident. This is because as you dive the sea absorbs the various colour wavelengths, until once you are past 30 feet, all becomes tones of blue/grey. If you have been on a night dive, you will have appreciated how a powerful torch brings out the amazing kaleidoscope of nature’s colours.
To bring the
same effect to your photographs,
you need a flash gun, and whilst the small units
built within the camera body are useful, the
difference a separate flash can make cannot be
underestimated. Not only is it more powerful
with a wider field of coverage and providing
greater relief, but you can decide where the
light source comes from; from the side, from underneath, from on top
and even from behind, you can underexpose; you can be creative.
